SHRINES

In addition to Haram eh Massomeen va Shohadha – Threshold of the Innocents and Martyred (2008), I have created a variety of shrines using non-traditional materials. Some shrines are made of plastic knives (like those of a fast food restaurant) or gold chains, each representative of the labor of transnational Muslim people. Rather than creating solely devotional or spiritual works within the Shrine series, I focus on the shrines as a collective, collaborative public monument with localized materials and iconography. I have also incorporated shrines as an installation approach within my larger ongoing series such as the bikini installations in the Stretch Manifesto and in Golestan Revisited.

Here are some examples of past and early shrines I created.
